  • Title: Therapeutic Communication Skills Teaching System for Assisted Mental Health Nursing

Abstract

In recent years, AI tutoring systems have been able to provide a wealth of knowledge consultation and teaching. However, more precise educational support systems are needed to acquire in-depth professional knowledge, especially in the medical and nursing fields. This study proposes a therapeutic communication skills self-practice system with prompting and scoring functions, targeting the 110th class of nursing interns at a medical university in central Taiwan as research subjects. One month before their Mental Health Nursing internship, the nursing interns used this system to simulate possible dialogue responses in nurse-patient communication, engaging in self-directed learning of communication skills. Additionally, in the system development phase, we primarily referenced the ADDIE model, a systematic and iterative educational training design framework. This educational support system features a Structured Query Language (SQL) database and scoring functions, allowing each nursing intern to practice repeatedly and record the status and scores of each session. Preliminary research results found that the t-value of single-sample pre- and post-tests for students using the system before the internship was much greater than the critical value of 2.045 (p < 0.05), reaching statistical significance. The conclusion is that through self-practice with the therapeutic communication teaching system, nursing interns significantly enhanced their ability to establish professional nurse-patient relationships and their confidence in communication skills. We believe that continuously adding practice cases to the system will help enrich the database and its practicality.
