Patient satisfaction is a key measure of healthcare quality, reflecting how well care providers meet the needs and expectations of those they serve. This study examines the satisfaction levels of patients cared for by Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students from the University of Baguio during their clinical placements in affiliating hospitals. With student nurses playing an integral role in hospital care, understanding their impact on patient experience is crucial for improving both education and healthcare delivery.
The study employed a descriptive-correlational design, surveying 75 patients admitted to five hospitals across Benguet, Mountain Province, and La Union. Using a structured four-point Likert-scale questionnaire, the research assessed three key dimensions of nursing care: competency, compassion, and communication. Data analysis, including weighted means, the Mann-Whitney U test, and the Kruskal-Wallis test, was conducted to identify satisfaction trends and significant differences between hospital settings.
Overall, patients reported high levels of satisfaction, with compassion scoring the highest (mean = 3.61). Patients appreciated the respect and emotional support provided by student nurses, as well as their genuine concern for patient well-being. Communication was also rated highly (mean = 3.64), with respondents valuing the student nurses’ approachability and use of clear, understandable language. Competency, while still satisfactory (mean = 3.51), revealed areas needing attention, particularly in providing sufficient information to support patients’ decision-making and spending adequate time at the bedside. Statistical tests indicated no significant differences in satisfaction levels across the hospitals, suggesting consistent care quality among the nursing students.
Based on these findings, the study recommends several strategies to enhance patient satisfaction further. These include integrating emotional intelligence training and active listening exercises into the nursing curriculum to strengthen student nurses’ interpersonal skills. Time management workshops and mentorship programs are also suggested to help students allocate more bedside time and enhance technical competencies. Additionally, regular patient feedback mechanisms and increased clinical supervision can ensure continuous improvement in care delivery.
This research underscores the importance of aligning nursing education with patient-centered care principles. By addressing the identified gaps, the University of Baguio can better prepare its nursing students to deliver compassionate, competent, and communicative care that meets and exceeds patient expectations. These findings contribute valuable insights for optimizing clinical training and improving healthcare outcomes in affiliating hospitals.
